CHAPTER TWELVE

Juggling Clues

The previous night had turned out to be full of surprises. But when Zeke texted Sue Jan and me in the a.m. and asked if he and Zara could meet with us somewhere to talk, I knew we were on a roll. Sue Jan and I talked and decided to call upon our old friend Bo who used to work at the Crown of Glory. Well, technically she worked there before we changed the name from Lovita’s Cut ’n Strut to the Crown of Glory Beauty Salon and Boutique. Any who, Bo and her husband Shaozu, own and operate our favorite Chinese restaurant in town, the Wok of Ages. They agreed to let us meet with the inky-dinky duo in the restaurant while they were setting up to open. That’s what good friends are for.

Sue Jan was stirring a packet of Stevia into a cup of decaf and staring at the TV screen up on the wall of the restaurant when I arrived. “Your jasmine tea is coming. Bo said she’d be back in a sec.”

“Thanks for ordering for me Suey. Did you notice all the traffic on the way here?”

“Hello Miz Clueless. Didn’t you turn on the news this morning?”

“No, I— didn’t get a chance.”

“Well,” she giggled, “Tiffi’s reporting that there might be a whole herd of them angry Squatches in the woods around Wachita, thanks to our unscripted addition to last night’s interview. She showed some real scary footage of the crew scattering as objects were hurled at the group to get them to leave the woods. Tiffi interviewed the TV show fellas after we skedaddled and they were all wide-eyed and trembling. I think Mr. Pinkie Mountebank is goin’ to have to change his name to Señor Poopy Pants.”

I covered my mouth with my hand as I bellowed laughter. “Oh Suey, you can’t make me laugh. It’s wrong to make a pregnant woman laugh like that.”

“You’d better sit down before I have to come up with a name for you too,” Sue Jan slid to make room for me.

Looming over the booth, I took a deep breath to blow out any remnants of giggling, snickering and such. Then I angled my body to begin the slow slide. “By the way, Hudson heard from the doctor in Washington. He’s not allergic after all.”

“What? Why did he get sick the other night then?”

“That’s the best part. That doctor thinks Hudson had something called sympathy sickness.”

“You mean on account of he felt sorry for you being pregsies?”

“Yup,” I bounced my head up and down. “The doctor told him that some husbands even put on weight in their stomach area like they’re with child, and even get weird cravings or pains.”

“Well, I’ll be!” Sue Jan giggled. “I’ll bet you’re glad he didn’t put on weight in his stomach area. Otherwise with the rest of him being so tall and slim, he’d look like he’s smuggling a basketball out of Walmart. I’m happy for you though, and the baby. Less risk with only one parent having the allergy.
